Blast Cleaning

Abrasive/Sand/Shot Blast Cleaning explained

Abrasive blasting is the first stage of an anti-corrosion treatment with the objective to greatly clean and improve the condition of surfaces. Getting the surface back to its original, clean state with the use of abrasive blasting ensures all contaminants are removed allowing for powder coats, wet paint or protective coatings to be seamlessly applied.

large-scale operations such as bridges or listed building facade revival. Media blasting and facade cleaning are commonly used for mobile projects due to the nature of treatments needed; for example, in the renovation of wood, brickwork, steel, cast iron and concrete to expose decorative components of the surface or prepare it for further treatments.

Other mobile abrasive blasting methods include marine blasting and paint removal. These have the primary purpose of removing existing paint or protective coatings to prepare the surface for a new coating or paint to be applied. Particularly with marine blasting, a dry abrasive blasting approach is usually taken to ensure no fouling of the exposed wood occurs prior to being protected.

abrasive blasting has established itself as the preferred cleaning method for the most effective surface preparation. The use of blast cleaning to ready surfaces, including metals, plastics, wood and glass, is more economically friendly and quicker than other methods. Some of the overall, stand-out beneficial factors of abrasive blasting for surface preparation are:

SAFE
Rest assured technicians highly skilled and experienced in blast cleaning. correct Personal Protective Equipment significantly minimises the risks posed by abrasive blasting to the operator, surrounding environment, and other surfaces (particularly in small or confined spaces), ensuring your peace of mind and complete safety.

PERSONALISED
The wide range of abrasives to hand means the finish achieved can be unique to the surface’s requirements. The extent of surface profiling can be controlled by different-sized media particles whereas there is no regulation with chemical methods.

EFFICIENT
Abrasive blasting is efficient with respect to time and cost - other surface preparation methods have to be accompanied by a secondary media, such as dry brushing after chemical cleaning, prolonging the processing time. Another advantage is, that with the use of abrasive blast cabinets, media can be used again and again, reducing the need to constantly purchase new abrasives making it also an economical solution.

ECO-FRIENDLY
With the removal of harmful chemicals, abrasive blasting is sufficiently more environmentally friendly as the abrasive media themselves are natural materials such as copper slag, aluminium oxide, glass bead or crushed glass, and stone grit.

Blast Cleaning brickwork

Highly qualified and motivated professionals

commercial and industrial brick cleaning for the London and Essex areas.
The exterior brickwork of buildings can be transformed using our sand blasting methods.

Whether it is used to clean off years of accumulated grime, or years of paint coatings, the final result brings buildings back to their former glory.
Blast cleaning techniques we use vary with the brickwork of commercial buildings. Refurbishment projects can benefit greatly from a clean, unpainted facade, or from having old and new bricks ‘blended’ to create a uniform finish. We offer a sample blast to a test patch to initially agree the standard of finish achievable.

Soft bricks require a soft medium so as to preserve as much of the face as possible, whilst removing all the coating.

Blasting can be done wet or dry and at variable pressures from 25 psi to 160psi, allowing a very specific method to be followed for each contract, thus producing the optimum finished results.

Removing paint from interior brickwork offers the chance to uncover the charm of old walls, which can add greatly to the aesthetic look of an area.
It is also a method of preparing walls that are to be re-plastered.

Blast cleaning as a method of removing paint coatings, or built-up grime from the exterior of houses is a quick and effective way to reveal the bricks and restore the property to its original state.
Whether your property is terraced or detached, we can offer a solution to grime or painted brickwork.

Internal brick work blast cleaning
Internal brick work can also be cleaned and restored back to the original state, and be left for an aesthetic finish. Brick fireplaces and internal walls can add character to a room once the bricks are exposed and all the coatings removed.

Blast Cleaning Timber

Beam / Timber blasting can be done sympathetically using an experienced blasting operator.
Original timber beams and panelling that have had years of accumulated paint or stain applied, can be cleaned back and restored to reveal the wood in its natural state.
Renovations to older properties can be greatly enhanced by cleaning the existing timbers and allowing the natural colour of the wood to be restored.

Hard wood doors and staircases can also be cleaned in this manner and the results can add charm to a refurbished property.
New oak structures, or extensions to old can be blasted to remove staining and grime and also to help blend both together.

Blast Cleaning Steel

Blast cleaning can be used to remove paint or corrosion from a variety of steel surfaces. Ornate metal railings can be cleaned back ready to be re-painted.
Blasting commonly cleans interior columns, which require preparation prior to fire proofing.
The surface is ready for the specialist coating to be applied by the next trade.

We can work to a commercial standard or to SAE 2.5 depending on the contract.
We will blast clean back to white metal or simply flash over the surface to remove light rust.
Internal and external staircases including balustrades and fire escapes respond well to sandblasting, allowing years of accumulated paint to be removed to either leave as an aesthetic finish or re-coat

Blast Cleaning Boats

Treatment of Osmosis Problems

Blast cleaning as a method for treating osmosis problems in fibreglass hulls is effective and quick. By using controlled pressure and the correct grade of media, as much or as little of the gel coating will be removed, as required.
The key that is created leaves the surface ready and prepared for re-coating.

Either for osmosis treatment or just anti foul removal, blasting is always successful as it can be localised to different areas on the hull.
The hull thickness invariably differs from one side to the other and even on the same side, the thickness of the gel coat can be extremely varied.

Timber and Metal Hulls Sand Blasting

Stripping back hard wood hulls, top decks and pitch pine surfaces using blast cleaning or sand blasting methods is extremely successful.
It gives a uniform surface, which is quickly ready for re-painting or varnishing etc.
Metal hulls and fittings can be blast cleaned of paint and rust, leaving a deep anchor etch for new coatings.
A sample blast can be arranged to ascertain the grade of abrasive and pressure that will be required in order to achieve the optimum results possible.

Blast Cleaning Concrete

highly experienced in Concrete Cleaning and sandblasting for Essex and London. Blast cleaning of concrete surfaces can expose the aggregate when necessary or simply clean the surface from staining or paint.

At the maximum pressure setting, we can crack open the hardest concrete to provide a perfect surface for re-coating. Concrete repair works require the surface to be keyed sufficiently to allow adhesion during the repair process. Blast cleaning provides this key without damage from vibration.

Recent legislation surrounding the effects of vibration to the operator of hand held equipment has meant that methods such as needle gunning have to observe a strict working practice.

Blast cleaning does not generate any vibration, either to the substrate itself or the operator. Work can continue without the need for frequent breaks etc. and there is no damage to either.

Specialist Coatings

Specialist coatings primers/mid coats/topcoats , and other specialist coatings , Airless and conventional spray paint Application , or by hand application

Protective coatings
Protective coatings are a simple solution to reduce the damaging effects of corrosion, heat and extreme weather can have on machines, equipment and structural surfaces. Without the use of protective coatings, the longevity and performance of the substrate will be compromised and, in some extreme cases, fail and collapse.
What is a protective coating?
A material applied in a thin or thick layer acting as a barrier for the surface it’s applied to, against harsh conditions. Protective coatings aid in the resistance against damaging factors such as corrosion, rust, heat, salt spray etc to prolong the life of structures, pieces of equipment, or vehicular items.
* Durable and resistant
* Environmentally sustainable
* Widely recognised
* Aesthetically pleasing
2 Pack, or alternatively 2 Pac, is a paint system involving a mixture of two parts – acrylic paint melamine (Colour), and a hardener (Resin). When combined, these two resins result in a chemical reaction producing a hardened solution. Similar to the paint we have on our cars.

intumescent coatings
Fire protective coatings or intumescent coatings are applied to load-bearing surfaces as a highly effective prevention method against the structural collapse of buildings. Once applied to the surface, the coating or paint acts to delay its deterioration when exposed to intense heat. Temperatures can reach between 200°C to 600°C before the paint’s molecular structure swells, in a controlled manner, to many times its original thickness. This produces a large number of minute bubbles that harden once cooled; creating a protective, carbonaceous char.
There has been a recent surge in demand for intumescent coatings within the architectural design industry due to its consistency. Usually used on steel structures, it can also be applied to timber and plaster. This protective coating performs best with metal structures but can offer protection against fire exposure for wood and plaster in terms of time. For example, a layer of intumescent paint applied to timber can increase its resistance against intense heat to 30, or, in some cases, 60 minutes.

WHY IS PROTECTIVE COATING METAL IMPORTANT?
Metal parts, machinery components and structures are all subjects to damage from substance reactions such as oxidation, hydrogen, an electrical current or even just bacteria and dirt.

Preventing this as best as possible is vital to keeping parts running smoothly and safely; if corrosion occurs and items start to deteriorate and fail, the damage could be life-threatening. Protective coatings will also give a longer life to what it is protecting, ensuring the surface and structures last and don’t require replacing - an efficient money and time saver.
